In this project Carnival of Illusions, I am exploring the boundaries of fashion design by using multi-media, which includes animation, projection mapping, sound effects, and garment performance.  

 

This work is a critique of the digital fashion spectacle called Live-Streaming Room, which is a rising E-commerce auction in China. In the Live-Streaming Room, Chinese online influencers sell millions of items every day by seducing fashionable young people who are gratified by a media-driven shopping experience, leading to hyper-consumption and fast fashion.  This work means to provoke my target audiences to critically reflect on their customer behavior, and review how many materials are wasted in this consumerist carnival. 

 

In my design process, the garment creation follows a common user journey on the platform.  

 

1. The garment is made into an avant-garde piece by recycling and deconstructing the fast-fashion garments.  

 

2. The animation deconstructs the media technology to de-mystify its mechanism and its purpose.  

 

3. The combination of garment reform and projection mapping represents the contrast between the physical reality of material waste and the illusion of constructed desire.   

 

This performance aims to reject the passive state of consumerism.
